Law Firm Terms of Business

1) Who we are and how we are structured

Remedy Legal Services Ltd ("Remedy Law", "we", "us", "our")

We are an SRA-authorised and regulated law firm based in England and Wales and we provide legal services to consumer clients.

Our SRA number is: [[TO BE COMPLETED]]

Our professional indemnity insurance

We maintain professional indemnity insurance in accordance with the SRA Minimum Terms and Conditions of Insurance. The details of our insurer are:

Insurer name: [[TO BE COMPLETED]]

Our structure and ownership

Remedy Law is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Remedy Legal Technology Ltd ("Remedy Tech").

  • Remedy Tech is not a law firm.

  • Remedy Tech is not SRA-regulated.

  • Remedy Tech does not provide legal advice or legal services to clients.

Remedy Tech provides the AI-powered software that Remedy Law uses for triage and case preparation.

Why we are telling you this

The SRA Code of Conduct requires us to be transparent about our financial interests and connections to other businesses.

Our solicitors

Legal work is delivered by a network of solicitors engaged by us. These solicitors are either employed or contracted as consultants by Remedy Law and their advice is provided under the terms of our professional indemnity insurance.

2) Our use of artificial intelligence

We use AI technology to help us provide legal services more efficiently. This section explains how we use it, how we protect your rights, and how we protect your data.

How we use AI

  • Consumer-facing triage: Our AI tool interacts with you during the initial intake stage. It acts as a triage assistant, gathering introductory information about your issue.

  • Internal case preparation: Our solicitors use our AI tool to assist with tasks such as reviewing and drafting documents.

Human oversight and your rights

We guarantee that a qualified human being is always in control of decisions that affect you.

  • The AI tool does not provide legal advice.

  • The AI tool does not decide whether to accept or reject your instructions.

  • The AI tool does not make any decision that materially affects your legal rights or the outcome of your case.

All legal advice is given by an English qualified solicitor. They review the output of the AI tool before it is acted upon or shared with you.

Data protection and training

Our AI system is a "closed" system.

  • We do not use your personal data to train, fine-tune, or improve the underlying AI model.

  • Your data is not used to train any third-party models.

  • AI-generated outputs and the records of our solicitors' review and sign-off are retained for 6 years for compliance and audit purposes.

3) Services and responsibilities

General services

We provide legal advice and representation in the areas of law specified in your Engagement Letter.

Our responsibilities

  • We will act with reasonable skill and care in providing our services to you.

  • We will follow your instructions, provided they are lawful and within our professional discretion.

  • We will keep you informed of the progress of your matter at regular intervals.

  • We will promptly respond to your enquiries and correspondence.

  • We will maintain client confidentiality in accordance with the law and our professional duties.

  • We will act in your best interests, subject to our duties to the court and the administration of justice.

Your responsibilities

  • You must give us clear and timely instructions.

  • You must provide all relevant documents and information we request to progress your matter.

  • You must respond to our communications promptly. Delays on your part may affect the outcome of your case or increase costs.

  • You must be available for meetings and court appearances as required.

  • You must treat our staff and consultant solicitors with respect and courtesy. We reserve the right to stop acting if you are abusive or aggressive towards our team.

4) Fees and funding options

We offer different ways to pay for our services. We will discuss which option is best for you based on your case and your financial circumstances.

General cost principles

We will provide you with a clear estimate of our costs and disbursements at the start of your case. We will update this estimate if the scope of the work changes significantly.

Disbursements

Disbursements are costs paid to third parties (e.g., court fees, expert witness fees, search fees). These are usually in addition to our fees.

VAT

Our fees are usually exclusive of VAT. You will be charged VAT at the applicable rate unless you are exempt.

Fixed fee arrangements

Under a fixed fee arrangement, we agree to carry out specific work for a set price.

  • This gives you certainty about the cost for the work covered.

  • If the work required exceeds the scope of the fixed fee (for example, if the case becomes significantly more complex than anticipated), we will discuss this with you and may agree a new fee or move to a different funding arrangement.

Conditional Fee Agreements (CFAs) / "No Win No Fee"

A CFA is an agreement where our fees are conditional on the outcome of your case.

  • If you lose your case, you do not pay our basic fees (subject to certain conditions).

  • If you win your case, you pay our basic fees, plus a "success fee".

  • The success fee is capped in accordance with regulatory requirements to ensure you keep a significant portion of your damages.

  • You remain responsible for disbursements and any costs awarded against you by the court. We may discuss "After the Event" (ATE) insurance to cover this risk.

Damages-Based Agreements (DBAs)

A DBA is an agreement where we take a percentage of the damages (compensation) you recover if you win.

  • If you lose, you do not pay our fees.

  • If you win, our fee is calculated as an agreed percentage of the damages recovered.

  • The percentage is agreed at the start and is subject to regulatory caps.

5) Identity verification and anti-money laundering checks

We are required by law to verify your identity before we can act for you.

  • We will need to see proof of your identity (usually a passport or driving licence) and proof of your address (usually a utility bill or bank statement).

  • We may use electronic third-party systems to verify your identity.

  • If we cannot verify your identity electronically, we may ask you to provide certified copies of documents or to attend an appointment with a qualified person to verify your identity.

  • We are also required to check where your funds are coming from if you are paying us.

6) Confidentiality and data protection

We process your information and personal data in accordance with our confidentiality and data protection policy, which can be found here [[PRIVACY POLICY LINK]]. In brief, our approach is as follows:

  • We will only process your personal data for the purpose of providing legal services to you.

  • We will keep your information secure and confidential.

  • We will not share your information with third parties unless it is necessary for your case (e.g., expert witnesses, barristers, the court) or unless we are required to do so by law.

  • We will retain your file for 6 years after the conclusion of your matter (or longer for certain matters, such as those involving children or where there is tax relevance).

  • You have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you. We may charge a reasonable administrative fee for providing copies of your file.

7) Liability and insurance

Our liability to you

We aim to provide high-quality services. However, our liability to you for any loss or damage arising from our provision of services (including negligence) is limited.

  • Our total liability to you is limited to the amount of the professional indemnity insurance cover we hold.

  • We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as loss of business, income, or data, that are not a direct result of our breach.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

As detailed in Section 1, we hold professional indemnity insurance that covers the work done by our solicitors.

8) Complaints procedure and the Legal Ombudsman

We want you to be happy with our service. If you are not, we have a complaints procedure to help resolve any issues.

How to make a complaint

  • Please contact us in writing, setting out the details of your complaint.

  • We will acknowledge your complaint within 7 days.

  • A senior member of our team who has not been involved in your matter will investigate your complaint.

  • We will send you a detailed response within 8 weeks of receiving your complaint.

Legal Ombudsman

If you are not satisfied with our final response, or if we do not respond within 8 weeks, you may be able to refer your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman.

  • The Legal Ombudsman is an independent body that resolves disputes between consumers and legal service providers.

  • You must usually refer your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman within 6 months of our final response.

  • The Legal Ombudsman may not be able to consider your complaint if it is more than 6 years since the problem occurred (or more than 3 years since you became aware of it).

9) Ending the agreement

Your right to end the agreement

You can end our agreement at any time by giving us written notice.

  • If you end the agreement, we will stop working for you immediately.

  • You will be responsible for paying for all work we have done up to the date of termination.

  • You will also be responsible for any disbursements we have incurred on your behalf that cannot be recovered.

  • If you are on a CFA or DBA, different rules may apply. Please refer to your specific funding agreement.

Our right to end the agreement

We may end our agreement with you if:

  • You do not pay our fees or disbursements when due.

  • You fail to cooperate with us or provide necessary instructions.

  • You breach our terms of business (e.g., by being abusive towards staff).

  • Continuing to act for you would place us in breach of our professional duties or the law.

If we end the agreement, we will give you reasonable notice and ensure your interests are protected as far as possible.
